Black and Brown Bodies in Motion Presents: Body & Soul Retreat
By now, we should all be in full swing with some of the habits we wanted to see more of this year. But if for some reason that’s not the case, you’re in company with many others who have the same issue committing to serious lifestyle changes with every new year. Fortunately, Black and Brown Bodies in Motion has the Los Angeles area covered with another chance to kick your health and wellness routine up into action. On February 17th, men and women are welcome to join the crew for a day long retreat to “treat yourself” on a Body & Soul reboot.

Revisit Saint Heron’s “17 Wards of Wonder” During Prospect 3 Featuring Kelis, SZA, and Katey Red
As the citywide visual and cultural art engagement Prospect 4 begins this weekend in New Orleans on November 18th, we’re revisiting our 2014 Saint Heron and Prospect 3 collaboration with Kelis, SZA and Katey Red for our original multidisciplinary art experience, “Amen! Amen! The 17 Wards of Wonder”!
The three part experience celebrated the unique regional culture and history through dining, music, and art experiences. The events occurred across the city, including “Bounce Baby Bounce,” a one-of-a-kind New Orleans style party bus produced by artist and brand collaborator Rashaad Newsome and hosted by legendary bounce artist, Katey Red. Our “Wine & Grind” five course dinner featured a live, intimate performance from SZA along with visual installations from a group of multi-talented artists before we left our woes all over the dance floor for our “Ball Out Beaucoup” dance party with a DJ set from Mannie Fresh and a close out performance from the iconic Kelis!

Mashonda Tifrere’s ArtLeadHER and Pen + Brush Present: King Woman
Mashonda Tifrere‘s swanky ArtLeadHER is collaborating with the unique NYC Pen + Brush gallery for an uplifting exhibition. ‘King Woman‘ will “pair underexposed female artists with their established contemporaries in an effort to support the less recognized artists within a community of like-minded women who share the ultimate goal of effecting real change in the marketplace for all women artists.”
ArtLeadHER is Mashonda’s own “dynamic platform to celebrate and bring awareness to the women creating, curating and thriving in the male-dominated art world” and offers the marketing support of boosting exposure, mentorship opportunities, exhibition placement and more. Pen + Brush is an exhibition space that houses “all forms of visual arts and created an imprint,” and “electronically publish literary fiction and poetry” by women artists, writers and influencers.
From performance art to visual installations to portraiture, ‘King Woman’ will feature visual artwork from, Rebecca Allan, Azi Amiri, Ingrid Baars, Hunter Clarke, Donna Festa, Carole Feuerman, Lola Flash, Meredith Marsone, Yvonne Michaels, Stephanie Hirsch, Emma Hopkins, Khakis Kennedy, Kit King, Jane Olin, Reisha Perlmutter, Renee Phillips, Trixie Pitts, A.V. Rockwell, Victoria Selbach, Lynn Spoor, Swoon, Taira, Roos Van Der Vliet, Elizabeth Waggett and Lynnie Z. We were fortunate enough to chat with Mashonda via email about the exhibit and her mission to support women in art. Here’s what she said,
The work in the ‘King Woman’ show is expressed though a deep level of soul connection, grace, femininity, strength and nature. The show has the power to tap into your past experiences, bring forth inspiration to your present moment and give you hope for the future.”

Saint Heron To Curate This Year’s Young Members Party at The Met
NYC! Having witnessed all the fly at this year’s Met Gala just a few weeks ago, we’re honored to announce that Saint Heron will be curating this year’s Young Members Party at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. At this year’s Young Members Party, all members of The Met between the ages of 21 and 45 are invited to join us for a celebration of art among fellow art lovers.
Tomorrow, June 21st, at 11am CST we will be gifting ONE SINGLE TICKET to one of our readers. The very first person to RSVP here at 11am CST will receive a single ticket to join us Thursday. The link will be live at this time.

Saint Heron Presents: The Saint Heron House New Orleans Jazz Fest
As a part of our New Orleans Jazz Fest festivities, we are back for weekend two with more exciting events in store! From May 5th-7th, join us at our Saint Heron House for an interactive experience through music and installation work.
On Friday May 5th, dance the night away as you move to sounds provided by Kyle Woods! This night will also feature curated multidimensional video projections inspired by Earth, Wind & Fire‘s timeless and legendary video for “September.” On Saturday and Sunday we will return with The Secret Life of Plants, our original art installation and ode to the great Stevie Wonder. With two time slots (2-6pm and 10pm-until), the always incredible Nia Andrews is set to perform on Saturday and PJ Morton will follow on Sunday with a performance (both scheduled for 11pm). Hot on the heels on of our Afropunk stage announcement, we’re happy to announce that we’ll be debuting our Saint Heron House cultural series at this year’s FORM Arcosanti. Join us in Arizona for The Secret Life of Plants installation, a special panel discussion edition of Roll Back, Say That, and a Soul Cleansing Jam Session on May 13th.

A Saint Heron Curated Stage To Be Presented At This Year’s Afropunk Fest in Brooklyn
AFROPUNK Brooklyn returns to Commodore Barry Park in Fort Greene for its 13th annual music festival on August 26th and 27th, and we couldn’t resist pitching in to make the two-day event another spectacular experience. Saint Heron is thrilled to announce that we’ve partnered with the creators of AFROPUNK to debut a special Saint Heron curated stage featuring Sampha, KING, Thundercat, Sinkane and more during this year’s festival.
The weekend will also include a Kaytranada curated stage (featuring Kaytranada himself, NAO, Sango and more) and the return of AFROPUNK’s original punk stage. Headlining performances will be announced at a later date, but with Gary Clark Jr., Macy Gray, SZA, Willow Smith, Michael Kiwanuka and many more already confirmed, you won’t wanna miss it.

Solange, Red Bull Music Academy & The Guggenheim Museum Present: “An Ode To”
Our undeniably talented boss lady Solange will be collaborating with the Red Bull Music Academy in New York to add to its running list of groundbreaking performances at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum on May 18th, 2017. Solange will activate the museum’s iconic Rotunda space with an interdisciplinary performance piece and meditation examining themes from A Seat at the Table through movement, installation work, and experimentation through re-constructing musical arrangements.
The album garnered commercial and critical acclaim all while carving out a lane of its own in the musical arena. Solange who shares both personal and political views on the album is ready to reveal a live visual component with unique arrangements.

View Gianni Lee’s ‘Why Won’t You Hear Me?’ Exhibition in NYC
The multi-talented Gianni Lee is officially the Brooklyn WaterFront Artist Coalition’s (BWAC) current artist-in-residence for his visual artistry which already scheduled to debut in NYC. Titled Why Won’t You Hear Me?, Lee’s exhibition is sponsored and brought to the BWAC’s Civil War Gallery by The O’Connell Foundation, Kenneth Cole and Nike. Gianni said, “My goal as an artist is to be heard and inspire change. I just think about growing up in West Philly. This wasn’t supposed to happen coming from where I’m from. I am truly grateful for this experience.”

Saint Heron Presents: “You’ve Got to Be Seen, Green!” New Orleans
In honor of the Mardi Gras season and an ode to the ever-so iconic The Wiz, Saint Heron is turning New Orleans into our own Emerald City. This Sunday, February 26, don’t you dare be caught dead in red because the color is green! Arrive at The Saint Heron House dressed in your gaudy hues of green and dance the night away at our “You’ve Got To Be Seen, Green” party.
Sounds for the night will be provided by DJ Kyle Woods along with a special performance by New Breed Brass Band. Stevona Elem-Rogers to Host Reflective Lecture on Black Womanhood at Xavier University
Womanist Writer and creator of #BlackWomenAreForGrownUps Stevona Elem-Rogers is hosting a lecture at Xavier University tomorrow evening. Grab your girlfriends (and tell the guys to tag along too) and make your way out to experience Elem-Rogers’ “All the Women are White, All the Blacks are Men, but Some of Us Are Brave: Exploring Black Womanhood in America.” The thirty-minute visual lecture will discuss various Black women who daringly and shamelessly maintained their own sense of self in the face of societal restraints. Covering everyone from Maya Angelou to Cardi B, Stevona is offering much more than a lecture presentation. She’s sharing a thought-provoking reflection on the necessity of Black womanhood.

Saint Heron Presents: The Secret Life of Plants
New Orleans, if you missed Homecoming on Thursday night, here’s another chance to kick it with us this weekend. On February 18th, Saint Heron is hosting a musically botanical experience and ode to Stevie Wonder‘s remarkable Journey Through The Secret Life of Plants album. The extrasensory body of work was the soundtrack to Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird’s book’s (The Secret Life of Plants) eponymous documentary.
Our resident DJ Kyle Woods will keep the party going with another flawless set of live mixes, so you’ll want to make sure you bring your dancing shoes along with your green thumb. Saint Heron, BMike and Nike Present: Homecoming
All Star weekend is approaching and Saint Heron, BMike and Nike have collaborated to kick the weekend off with a special celebration of New Orleans culture this Thursday, February 16th. In our first ever pep rally-style event, Southern University’s “Human Jukebox” band and Dancing Dolls will be joining us for the spirited nightcap.
Nike’s theme for the weekend is “Equality” and we’re certain that the south’s baddest collegiate marching band and their leading ladies are the most fitting live act for such a night. Performing live renditions of everything from Faith Evans‘ “Soon As I Get Home” to Michael Jackson‘s “Liberian Girl” to Rae Sremmurd‘s “Black Beatles,” SU’s marching band has maintained a limitless versatility throughout the years. They’ve earned numerous awards and have performed in renowned venues like Radio City Music Hall, the Superdome, Georgia Dome, Yankee Stadium and more. In addition to appearances in two Spike Lee productions, the Human Jukebox and Dancing Dolls were the first band to have been featured on ABC’s Nightline and was present to help revive the spirit of New Orleans in the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina’s devastation.
DJ Mannie Fresh and Kyle Woods will keep the party going as they take over the DJ booth with live sets. And we want to be certain you, our supporters and friends, have no excuse not to be there so the event is absolutely FREE! Saint Heron Presents: The Saint Heron House – Miami
Miami, our post-Thanksgiving PROCLAMATION! party was so incredible that we couldn’t stay away too long. This time, we’re taking full advantage of the opportunity for fellowship with two days of The Saint Heron House. On Friday, January 27th, you’ll be dancing your woes away with us to the sounds of our resident DJ Kyle Woods after a special Burning an Illusion screening. The 1981 film was just the second movie from a Black director (Menelik Shabazz) in Britain and follows Pat (a British-born woman of color) whose dreams of becoming a wife slowly slip between her fingers after a series of unfortunate events.
On Saturday, January 28th, we’re hosting our high vibrational Soul Cleansing with Grammy-winning cellist/singer-songwriter Leyla McCalla. This meditative experience will precede a special afterparty where all our guests are invited to exchange all the refreshed energy Leyla will usher in.

We are so excited to share that we will be hosting our artist talk series Roll Back, Say That featuring the south-side Chicago braiding queen, Shani Crowe on January 28th in New Orleans! Stop by at 1:00 p.m. for a live art presentation of her “Braids” series and an intimate discussion moderated by the cultural practitioner and entrepreneur, Gia Hamilton.
If unfamiliar, Shani Crowe is the designer of Solange‘s epic head piece look during her live performance on NBC’s Saturday Night Live. Having a deep appreciation for her culture and the royalty of her roots, Shani uses her hair braiding techniques to honor her heritage and celebrate Black feminine beauty.
